Abstract

The modern world is experiencing an era of turbulent changes, which no aspect of human society can avoid. Religion has no way to become an exception, even though, for centuries, it was considered a “safe harbor” that can provide shelter among the waves of a turbulent world. This situation, in turn, cannot but call for reciprocal actions in the research field. In postnormal times characterized by complexity, contradictions, chaos, and instant changes, Religious Studies require the use of a new epistemology and methodological apparatus. Taking Islamic Studies as an example, the article suggests integrating traditional approaches with new ones borrowed from the Futures Studies discipline. As a result of such an experiment, the article proposes a list of new topics for Islamic Studies scholars and an analysis of possible futures scenarios, emphasizing their diversity.
