The instrumentalization of religion in nationalist rhetoric: a comparison of Poland and Russia

This article presents a comparative analysis of the status and role of religion in Poland and Russia, examining both the present day and historical perspectives. The comparison focuses on several key dimensions concerning the role of religion in society: the historical context of state-church relations; the legislative and institutional support provided to religious organizations; the involvement of religious leaders and institutions in the political process; the role of religion in education and public life; state and public financial support for religious groups; and, finally, the use of religion within nationalist rhetoric. The study highlights both the commonalities and the distinct features of how religion functions in these two contexts.
